Last weekend I had the pleasure of taking in a wonderful workshop at

Random Arts in Saluda, NC IMG_2459

Fractured Angels Workshop by Kate Thompson IMG_2456kate shared her techniques of making her amazing fabric collage/mixed media pieces.

We started with fabric: pieces of cotton and muslin layering with old laces trimed pieces and odd pieces of fabric to give it added interest. These pieces were plastered together with joint compound of plaster and sealed together with gel medium ending with a piece of watercolor paper fused in with plaster around the edges.

Here are some of my step by steps:

IMG_2450after creating the layers we did image transfers of faces and started adding mediums to make them our own.

we used watercolores, pastel, markers more collage and pencil to bring the angles into the fabric atmoshphere. Kate’s techniques were so helpful and watching her demonstrate was inspiring. If you get a chance to take one of her classes – I recommend it!

It was a great experience in a wonderful enviroment. I have to name drop and add that I had the treat of sitting next to Donna Downey who was so inpiring, helpful and added a lot of  humorous comments to the weekend. IMG_2453Thanks to Jane at Random Arts who is a warm and friendly art pal to have…I will watch for more fun in Saluda…both little gems in the North Carolina Mountains!
